Reef Island Dock Restoration - Lake Joseph

Reef Island is a rare 5-acre private paradise on Lake Joseph, celebrated for its sculptural infinity shape, expansive shoreline, and architectural heritage. Its legacy as an exclusive Muskoka landmark demanded a restoration that respected its storied setting.

This dock, once failing and unsafe, including, a collapsed catwalk during a site visit; underwent a full surface restoration. Rotten boards and stairs were replaced, creating a safe surface that integrates seamlessly with the existing boathouse and natural shore, without disrupting the island’s historical narrative.

The restored dock now stands as a quiet testament to durability, heritage, and a reverent continuation of Reef Island’s architectural story.

Project Overview

This dock restoration on Reef Island demonstrates what careful assessment and skilled craftsmanship can achieve over a full replacement. The original timber dock structure — a classic Muskoka build with decades of history — was showing signs of weathering and structural fatigue. Rather than recommending a costly full rebuild, our team conducted a thorough structural assessment and determined that selective timber replacement, redecking, and protective treatment would extend the dock’s life by 15 to 20 years while preserving its original character.

Scope of Work

Structural assessment of existing dock frame and crib system. Selective replacement of compromised timber members while retaining sound original structure. Full redecking with pressure-treated lumber finished with a premium marine-grade sealant. Installation of new cleats, bumpers, and dock hardware. Application of a two-coat protective treatment system to all exposed timber surfaces. Final inspection and sign-off in compliance with Muskoka waterfront regulations.

Location

Reef Island, Lake Muskoka, Muskoka District, Ontario.
